چکیده

A 17 month old girl with tricuspid atresia, ventricular septal defect, subvalvar and valvar pulmonary stenosis, and increasing cyanosis had angiographic evidence ofproximal stenosis of a right modified (5 mm diameter) Blalock-Taussig shunt. She underwent palliative balloon angioplasty with a 6 mm Schneider balloon catheter. Successful dilatation was achieved without complication. Four months later there was subjective clinical improvement with a rise in systemic arterial saturation. Repeat angiography showed patency of the shunt without restenosis or formation of an aneurysm.

Recanalisation of an occluded modified Blalock-Taussig shunt by balloon dilatation.

A four year old boy with pulmonary atresia and ventricular septal defect had an acute cyanotic episode three years after undergoing a right-sided, 6 mm diameter, modified Blalock-Taussig shunt. On admission no continuous murmur could be heard from the shunt and the typical high velocity, continuous flow profile of the shunt could not be identified by Doppler echocardiography. At catheterisation...

Perigraft seroma complicating the modified Blalock-Taussig shunts: two consecutive instances with review of literature.

Systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunts using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) (modified Blalock-Taussig shunt) are being used successfully in palliation of cyanotic congenital heart diseases. Graft thrombosis is by far the most common complication of the procedure. Persistant serum leakage through PTFE graft causing perigraft seroma is a rare but devastating complication resulting in increased durat...

Infection of modified Blalock shunts.

A left-sided interposition graft (modified Blalock-Taussig anastomosis) was constructed with polytetrafluoroethylene in a three month old child with tetralogy of Fallot. This shunt thrombosed and a replacement shunt became the site of chronic Pseudomonas infection. The second anastomosis was excised and a third interposition graft was inserted on the right side because the anatomy was unsuitabl...

Transcatheter occlusion of a Blalock-Taussig shunt with a detachable balloon in a child.

A case of transcatheter occlusion of a Blalock-Taussig shunt with a detachable silicone filled balloon is described. This 11 year old boy had previously had a repair of tetralogy of Fallot together with ligation of a large Blalock-Taussig shunt. Though there was a good surgical result, the shunt proved to be incompletely closed leaving a significant left to right shunt. As an alternative to a f...
